The Developments Made To Modern Office Furniture With Regards To Fire Safety

With so many PCs and other electrical equipment being used in offices throughout the UK there is a very real threat of fires starting within our workplaces. Many lives have been lost due to fires in the workplace in the past, but recent improvements have been made to modern office furniture with the aim of saving workers lives in the future.

Problems caused

The fact that we all need a desk to work at and a chair to sit on means that there is a huge amount of furniture in our offices which creates problems with fires. Unfortunately in the event of a fire this furniture only serves to feed the flames and cause more risk to lives. Burning furniture in the office can make it more difficult for employees to leave the building.

Furniture layout

Research has shown that by planning the layout of furniture offices could become less of a fire risk. The idea behind this was that by leaving as much space as possible between desks there was less chance of the fire spreading and more room for employees to manoeuvre.

With this in mind most modern office furniture is designed so that it can be placed differently than it could in the past. One good example of such a design is the now common ergonomically curved desks that afford banks to be created by pushing them back to back and side to side. A good walkthrough area is created behind the seating area of the worker whilst also making good use of office space.

A change in materials

Another area where modern office furniture has made huge strides in the interests of fire safety is by making changes to the materials used in manufacture. Reputable manufacturers will now use materials that are much less likely to catch fire quickly and spread the fire easily. Also, the materials now used do not give off toxic gasses when burnt, which can often prove as lethal as fire itself.
